Mark 12:30 says: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”

At Gardner-Webb University, we believe that faith shapes not only what we believe, but also how we learn, grow, serve, and care for others. As you reflect on Mark 12:30, tell us what it means to love God with your whole heart, soul, mind, and strength and how you have worked to live that out in your own life.

Jesus identifies four unique aspects of who we are in this verse, each equally important:

Heart - Your passion, purpose, motivation, and compassion. Your heart reflects what matters deeply to you and what inspires you to serve and make a difference.

Soul - Your faith and spiritual life. Your soul reflects your relationship with God and the ways your faith shapes who you are and the direction of your life.

Mind - Your intellect, curiosity, and desire to learn and understand. Your mind reflects your pursuit of knowledge and your commitment to continued growth.

Strength - Your character, resilience, confidence, and willingness to act. Your strength reflects your ability to persevere through challenges and use your gifts in service to others.

At Gardner-Webb, we believe one of the clearest ways we demonstrate our love for God is through the way we love and serve others. As you reflect on Mark 12:30, consider how your faith has shaped the way you treat, encourage, serve, and care for the people around you, as well as the ways you have challenged yourself to grow, pursue excellence, and use your God-given abilities.

Use specific examples and your own words to tell your story. We want to hear what matters to you, understand the experiences that have shaped you, and see how you might contribute to the Gardner-Webb community.

Your response should be thoughtful, compelling, and carefully written, with correct grammar and spelling. The most engaging writing tells a story. Let your essay reveal your passions, personality, faith, and perspective.

This essay must be your original work and written entirely in your own words. Please do not use artificial intelligence (AI) to write, generate, or substantially revise your essay. We want to hear directly from you and understand your experiences, perspectives, and voice.

    Letters of Recommendation

Character Recommendation - A letter that speaks to your character, servant leadership, and involvement in your community, including how you strive to live out the values reflected in Mark 12:30.

Academic Recommendation - A letter that speaks to your character and servant leadership in the classroom, including your approach to learning, relationships with others, and contributions to your school community.

*Recommendations should be written by someone who knows you well and should not be submitted by a family member or relative. These letters may be sent directly to the applicant for submission.

    Resume

Resume - Your resume should highlight your extracurricular involvement and interests, including clubs, leadership roles, and service activities through your school, church, or other organizations. The resume should not exceed one page.
